Chabad's Hanukkah menorah to be lit Friday in downtown Reno

Chabad of Northern Nevada plans to light its menorah at 3:30 p.m. Friday in downtown Reno near First and Virginia streets.
The menorah is decorated with recycled wire this year.
“The holiday was how one jug of oil lasted for eight days, so that is a great miracle…but also it can be a lesson of conservation, of making something last longer,” Rabbi Mendel Cunin said. “Something that was meant to be used only for one day lasted for eight days, so we are taking wire that would have been put in the garbage, and we are reusing it for another cause…”
The menorah is an eight-branched candelabrum lit during Hanukkah. Known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah officially starts at sundown Friday and runs through Dec. 19.
Other Hanukkah events with Chabad are planned in the coming days.
From 2-4 p.m. Sunday, “From Light to Light: Community Hanukkah Event” is set for the Chabad, building, 1175 W. Moana Lane. The festivities will showcase recyclable art projects, Jewish foods and cookies. As part of the event, the downtown menorah will be lit.
Other events include a Hanukkah party with Gov. Jim Gibbons in Carson City on Monday, Chabad announced.
On Tuesday, a Children’s Hanukkah party with Aleph Academy as the host is planned from 3:15-4:15 p.m. at Chabad. This event is geared toward families with young children.
